Why does the world need Polyphony?
Music is wonderful. It lowers stress and anxiety, strengthens immunological response, and connects us as humans. More people play instruments than ever, but few choose to learn music theory. Why?
First, it's usually boring. Traditional theory teaching methods are outdated, with rigid pedagogies focusing mainly on classical music, exams and grades. Second, school music programs are being cut across North America, while expensive, time-consuming lessons are simply not an option for many people, young or old. Even free online courses often force students to catch online sessions for weeks or months at a time. Who has that kind of time for something they're often doing for fun, or to better themselves? And so many choose to teach themselves in their spare time, on YouTube.
Thousands of hours of quality music theory education is available on YouTube, ranging from pop to video games and everything between, but teaching yourself music theory is a confusing, disjointed, frustrating and isolating experience. People often don't know what they don't know, making it nearly impossible to figure out which videos to watch and in what order.
There must be a better way. With your help, we hope to create one.

No other free music education program comes close. |
But... why even bother learning theory?
How many times have you gone an entire day without hearing music?
Music is inescapable, so it's probably worth knowing something about.
Active ListeningKnowing music theory lets us listen more actively, helping us identify not just that something moved us, but how and why.
|
Marketable SkillMany jobs intersect with music, from marketing to film to video games, so knowing how to talk about music has value.
|
Greater AppreciationMuch like learning grammar for a language learned as a child, music theory gives us a systematic way of understanding sounds that already made us feel something, letting us better appreciate all music.
And that's something everyone deserves.
